About Rich Exner
As the data analysis editor for years at The (Cleveland Plain Dealer) and cleveland.com, Rich was responsible for database analysis and the use of mapping as a reporting tool throughout the newsroom, teaching reporters in CAR techniques, and developing interactive databases and maps for the Internet.
He currently is an editor overseeing business, medical, environment, real estate and data reporting. Previously, Rich was an assistant metro editor, a metro reporter mainly covering county government, transportation and tax topics, and a sports copy editor, before going full-time into data work.
Earlier in his career, Rich was the Cleveland bureau chief and Ohio state editor for United Press International, and a photographer and sports reporter for a variety of publications. He is a journalism graduate from The Ohio State University.
In addition to his work at cleveland.com, he writes a column on Ohio State sports for the Buckeye Sports Bulletin and has taught journalism as an adjunct faculty member at Cleveland State University and Cuyahoga Community College.

Rich has made presentations at SPJ and IRE/NICAR conferences, and been a guest speaker at Bowling Green State University, Kent State University, Cleveland State University, John Carroll University and Central Michigan University.
